Work on IceTop 2009/20010 by Hermann Kolanoski (last days and 'redeployment')

The water in the first filled tanks comes close to freezing temperature.

Nice ice crystals on the DOM holding gadgets.

When the water in a tank starts freezing, the lids covering the tank will be
opened to allow for faster freezing (within about 50 days). At the same time
sun shades will be wrapped around the preinstalled frames to prevent that
direct sunshine causes ice irregularities. On the picture: Casey, Arne, Chris.

Opening the lids is a delicate process - even if the water is about
30 degrees warmer than the air you do not want to fall into it.

Another 'house mouse': this time IceCube has to care for a certain
part of common rooms. Here Chris cleans the windows of the B2 launge.

The 'quiet reading room' cleaning belongs also into our task list.

My last evening at Pole. All of the IceTop team have the feeling that
we can celebrate the achievements of the last weeks.
It was a very good working atmosphere. Thanks to James, Casey and Chris.

James takes care that rules are obeyed: in this refridgerator only
alcoholic liquids are allowed.

A good-bye present from heaven: a nice sun halo with sun dogs.

Flight over the Transantarctic Mountain Range  towards the Ross Sea
and McMurdo Station.

The crew in the cockpit generously offers views on the spectacular
Antarctic scenerie.

For me the race to the Pole is over.

16IMG_1073_sm.jpg
Being only 5 civilian passengers we had enough room in the cargo plane.

17IMG_1080_sm.jpg
We landed on the Pegasus Field near McMurdo where we were dropped at a
bus stop in the middle of nowhere on the shelfice.

18IMG_1082_sm.jpg
Finally 'Ivan the Terra Bus' picked us up.

The fastes way to escape seems to be gliding on the belly.

View on McMurdo from the sea. In the forground Scot's Hut, which the
Scott party had bulit for wintering during the 1902-04 Discovery Expedition.

On this trip I became honorary Texan.

The jet cargo transporter C-17 which brings us to Christchurch.

26IMG_1133_sm.jpg
Inside the C-17. There was a limited number of seats as in regular planes.
I got one.

And in the Canterbury Museum Amundsen and Scott still side on side.
