WITTENBERG EXCURSION
24.08.01 13.00 hrs - 20.00 hrs
Come with us to visit the largest Reformation history museum in the world and be awed by the historical flair of this town. Welcome to the city of the Reformation, the workplace of Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon, Johannes Bugenhagen, the artists Lucas Cranach the Elder and the Younger, Tycho Brahe and many others. Friedrich Schorlemmer lives and works here today, and Friedensreich Hundertwasser has come up with a design for rebuilding the Luther Gymnasium which starts during the summer of 1997.
We begin our tour at the Castle Church, the church that has made Wittenberg so famous. It was in this place where, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther made public his 95 Theses, "Against the Abuse of the Indulgence Trade".
Visit the Cranach house - Lucas Cranach was the court painter for the Elector here in Wittenberg. He received so many commissions that he wasn't able to complete them all without help. To solve the problem he founded an art studio that employed around 30 apprentices. The studio produced not only paintings, but also engaged in simpler work like house painting. In addition Cranach was a pharmacist, publisher, city council member, and mayor.
The beautiful renaissance town hall in the middle of the marketplace has been preserved by fortunate circumstances and intelligent decisions. Wittenberg was first mentioned in an official document in 1180 and was granted the status of city approximately one hundred years later. In order the show off their wealth, the gentry had the old wooden town hall torn downand the current town hall built in its place.
In 1518, Phillipp Melanchthon came to Wittenberg. At first he owned just a simple, half-timbered house. In 1536, he was given this beautiful house with its striking gables by the Elector. The gate with the carved seats is typical of the Renaissance. In this house are, among other things, Melanchthon's study and the room where this famous humanist died. By the time he died, Melanchthon was already known as "Germany's teacher."
