Data storage and retrieval demands of the high-energy physics
community are amongst the most challenging in the scientific
world. This is due to the number of files and large filesizes involved
and the type of calculations, which require frequent access to
numerous data. The paper describes an approach to estimate the total
bandwidth of a suitable mass storage system, taking into account
robotics and tape drives as well as associated server platform(s) and
presents some EMASS/GRAU solutions for these environments with a
special focus on DESY (Scalable and flexible mixed media robotic
hardware from GRAU Storage Systems is in use at both DESY locations,
Zeuthen and Hamburg).
