Introduction
Introduction
- Two types of video conferencing differentiated by the type of network over which information flows
- Circuit switched
- End-end connections a priori
- Resources are reserved - others cannot use them
- Eliminates interference from traffic exogenous to the conference
- QoS can be guaranteed or service denied
- Latency can be predicted
- Long distance charges:
- two 64Kbps calls
- Example: ERVN using commercial ISDN BRI calls
- Packet switched
- No connections
- No reserved resources
- Interference from outside traffic likely
- Cannot guarantee QoS
- Latency unpredictable
- Share existing facillities
- Example: MBone over the Internet
