Messaging Systems Challenges for the High Energy Physics Community

Implementations at DESY and at CERN

In the last years several High Energy Physics computing centers undertook migrations of their
infrastructure to distributed computing environments. Moreover, as collaborations are working world-
wide, physicists need good communication systems and in particular a high quality, feature-rich and
interoperable messaging system. In this context, CERN and DESY as well as other HEP laboratories
decided to provide a solution based on a set of Internet messaging technologies including the Internet Mail
Access Protocol (IMAP). This document will review the market technologies, evolutions, challenges. In a
second part the CERN and DESY implementations will be exposed and the last section will attempt to give
guidelines on some possible evolutions to offer good services to the physicists community.
