The idea of these icalendar (ics) files is, that you can subscribe to them from a calendar application like Mozilla Sunbird or KOrganizer. The program subscribes directly to the given URL, so the calendar automaticly gets to know about changes in the calendar file and you're always up to date.
The next step would be an web application allowing users to instert events, too.
